I find great joy in the creative process, whether editing pieces for local newsletters, writing for regional magazines or other publications, or finding a lyrical pattern that fits a melody line just right.

My writing background

I’m really good at sorting through jumbled opinions and facts and presenting them sincerely and reliably in a verbal way. I can quickly put the little pieces of life together and see the big picture.

Though writing comes naturally to me, I specialize in collecting information, developing creative ideas, making meaningful connections with readers, and strategizing story placements. I like to work with people who care about what they do, but who may not be able to describe their work in a way that others will understand.

My greatest strength is turning ideas and perceptions into solid, smart, and positive action. I have a strong, patient, collaborative and motivating work style and I can bring out the best in the people with whom I work. I truly enjoy helping others find success.

I bring enthusiasm and experiences as a former wildland firefighter, national park ranger, news reporter, and editor, to my work. I graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota with a double major in English (Creative Writing) and Environmental Studies (Biology), and have won awards from the Inland Press Association and the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for my writing and photography. The Institute for Journalism and Natural Resources, in Missoula, Montana, has also named me “fellow” and “protégé.”

My music background

I started with classical and jazz piano, but a winter living in Paradise Valley, Montana, inspired me to develop a basic, self-taught style of finger-picking and rhythm guitar. Building on these foundations, I’ve crafted an array of original songs influenced by music ranging from folk and punk to jazz and blues.

One of my favorite things to do is perform music with others. Most recently I’ve teamed up with a drummer, cellist and banjo player to come up with some very intriguing rhythms and sounds. I have an album, titled “Identity Crisis,” which is a bit experimental, but not so much that the music is pretentious.

A long-time friend, Sasha Mercedes, recorded the album in the living room of a fellow she house-sat for in Madison, Wisconsin. Tom Fabjance, who has done work with Mazzy Star, the Smashing Pumpkins, and the Sacred Heart Music Studio in Duluth, Minnesota, mastered the CD.

Since the album came out I’ve written more songs, and I’ve got quite a bit of live material recorded thanks to the help of Sasha Mercedes. So, a new album may be in the works, but it will take me some time to get it sorted out.
